This is a lovely group shot. A real sense of warmth pours out of this image and there's a real sense of togetherness amongst these people. They certainly seem to like you ...

I think it shows too, cleo.

Such warm and happy faces on the Mayan family members.
And that's a tribute to you and your attitude with them - they're looking at you as trusting you and giving you their best - and it's all natural. Not a shy face in the group.

The menagerie of faces and their candid body language tell the story simply and colorfully. Even little brother adds his statement with not being concerned about his little mess on the new shirt.

A nice documentary style photo that shows a loving family relationship - and what a family - ten children. No wonder Daddy wasn't there. Imagine he stays especially busy at the main plaza with having that many mouths to feed and bodies to clothe.

Wonderfully expressive photo of love and life with the Mayans.

    Thank you so much.
Thats one of the communities who are a little bid better of. Not so isolated as others as seen on the more modern close. Many of the man are of to work somewhere else. The land is to poor to feed them all. In the tourist locations or the USA. The 'farm' is run by the woman and children. The daddy of this family seams to have a double job: In a nearby tourist resort were he stays two weeks and than has two days off and at home were he spend the off time and the Holidays.

How sad to think that daddy works for two weeks away from home and only gets to come home for two days. I can see how mom and the kids must be the ones to take care of homesteading. So much cultural news you give that I find it intriguing though heart-breaking. Poverty does so much to rob people of their potential. Perhaps. I don't know. Perhaps it's - again - all relative. Maybe it increases the drive to survive. We could write essays on the subject I suppose. Recently one of the major tv networks did a program on poverty in the Appalachian area of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia and how it pushes people into drug abuse and many other problems. Just a sad comment on life today.

    Thank you for your thoughts.
Actually this family is one of the lucky ones. Daddy is still near and comes home often. Many of the man are working fahr away and are home only for the winter holidays.
It is not a family in poverty. [Even that word is relative]. They aren't reach but they aren't poor ether. It is actually a family doing well. Look at the close they have. It's new, bought in a store. They own land what helps to feet them, The have chickens for the eggs. It's a different life were values are set different. Family count a lot but on the other hand it is custom for a long time that the man and older children follow the work were ever they find some to support the family. Just think of the Mexican workers who were brought into the US for the harvest since the 1900's.
Yes there is a lot of real poverty around here too.

So much wisdom and understanding in your words. And so true. Values are different. And there it makes all the difference in the world. I'ts just a real confirmation on human dignity to think how they relate to and so vividly show the value of family.

I love seeing their joy with each other and at having their picture taken. Except for the attire and housing, it could be any of our families. I like the way you shot the common human thread. Good luck in the contest. Donkeyoatey

This is a great shot of a happy looking family That is such a big family it looks unusual although when I was growing up it was seen more Now to look at a family this large it is interesting The mother is a hard working woman but she looks happy

Thank you so much for your generous review. These large families are still very common through the Mayan world fro the Yucatan to Honduras.

It's a great portrait of the family. In a group portrait of a close knit family when every body smiles nothing can go wrong. The photograph would always look good. It shows the festive mood. Good color and detail.

What a sweet and happy looking family. I like your notes. It is so important to value family, and some cultures like this one does do just that.
We have nice Latino neighbors they take care of each other, and they adopt us as well as we help them too.

There is something enjoyable about scene a family in smiles. I do feel sorry for the young fella as his plight is obvious. By the looks on their faces life at this moment is happy and tomorrow will be what it will be. It is a difficult capture but well taken. Thank you for a vision into the "lost world". Dennis

Great initial impact with this big family, and story telling ability as well. It's like the old days in my country. My great-great grandfather had 24 children (two wives of course).
Beautiful light and colors. Your photo seems to show a happy family looking forward to celebrate Three Kings Day. Good luck in the contest!
Thank you so much for sharing! Karin.
