I know nothing and then some about digital art. It's pretty obvious that you know one heck of a lot about it. Fantastic work.

Thank you :-) ; that was one of my first paintings with that program. [It's really not that good. I was just learning it back than]. It's done pretty much like real traditional painting. I even chose what [digital-] paper or canvas I chose. It's just that I move the brushes now with my fingers on the mouse pad without splattering paint around me. I started tom paint digital when it got to complicated to get the traditional materials down here.

I am fascinated by the way this painting moves, and stops - I can see the movement of the water, the tide flowing in... and yet, in another way, when I see it as shapes, it becomes an interesting, flowing abstract. It keeps me looking.
I think perhaps if the rocks were more detailed and concrete against the soft focus of the moving water, it might not happen... but I don't know that I'd like that better. Beautiful, soft, mellow colors, beautiful work.

Thank you so much. You are right on. The stones are not defined in purpose and the reality her includes a little bit of an surreal touch. Sometimes when the light is right it looks that way in nature. The stones are slick with the salt and wet but don't reflect light on a cloudy morning. So shadows also creeping between.

This is fantastic! What were your settings in order to give that slow spooky look? This is a once in a lifetime catch. Thanks for sharing, God bless,

Thank you so much for your kind review. I have to disappoint you. That is not a photo but a painting, Truth I used several photos of our reef on a dark and stormy day as reference, the picture is the invention of my imagination. I guess the spooky look is do to the colors I used.

this is nice. i like the smoothness of the water. good center of interest the water breaking onto the rocks. good creativity in presentation as you thought this up. good technical excellence to put it together. good story telling ability as the water will keep breaking on the rocks and make them smooth after a while. just like the water.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review. I used several of my photos as reverence but the scape is an invention of my imagination.

You have certainly captured the rage of the sea when it is whipped by the wind.Like how it is coming over the rocks like a sheet at the back and then splashing over the reefs in the foreground which looks so very natural. Well done and thanks for sharing.

I feel that this should be first crack of dawn. the sun not quite up. the mist is strong in the chilly air of a new day's dawn. Lovely painting. Gretchen

Nice feel of the water spilling over the rocks. The wave is spilling too rather than breaking.. The light and darks are good and very dramatic, but the wave feels too solid. I think it would feel more like a wave if there was some ocean green in it. That way it would have some light coming through and not look so solid.

Thank you Margo. The ocean green is a good idea but look at the sky, cloudy allover. It is an dark and stormy day. Light isn't coming through; Light in the waves would be not right I think. Am I wrong?
reply by blackell on 12-Feb-2010
No you are right, and that is why it is dark. I see it is not as dark as the rocks, and still feels like water.

Thank you for your kind reply Margo. I think I have chosen the wrong day, I should have taken one with sun light. I will the next time.

there is a sense of timeless beauty in the ocean, especially the white waters rushing over large rocks to a place it knows. the rock gives the viewer a sense of security, white the powerful white makes you want to venture into its powerful grasp. excellent prespective that allows the viewer to wonder and image the rest really works nicely in this painting. very nice painting, very powerful.
