Nice close up of a heron, but perhaps not a macro shot. The colors of the bird are showing really well in this photo. The focus is however a bit soft. Would have liked to see better definition and clarity. Use of light is good. The background seems a bit busy, and if possible I would have tried to get it even more blurry. I think the placement within the frame is good. Since this is an entry for a macro contest I would have cropped it even tighter. All together a nice photo and well balanced. Good luck with the contest.

This shot is Absolutely stunning and I love it...but I don't think it belongs in a macro contest. :o) I would call this a closeup! Macro is taking pictures of small or tiny objets and showing them BIG! :O)
After saying that I think this is one of the most beautiful shots I've ever seen of a Great Blue Heron. I love the coiled up neck ready to strike. I also love the darker hues of your lighting which really make this shot striking.
If this was NOT in the contest and I had a six I would have given you one. I don't deel as I can give you a five because this is not a macro shot. I'm giving you 4 1/2 because of that.
It really is a phenomenal shot though and I want you to know that. :o) Helvi

You have a good DOF with f/5.6. I like how the subject is fairly sharp with everything else out of focus. The dark back/foreground really helps the subject stand out to almost a 3D image. You have plenty of leading lines with the twigs leading ones' eyes to the bird. You have the most important thing in the image tack sharp. It's very important that if the subject has eyes, they must be tack sharp because that is where a person checks the photograph first. Excellent focusing on the eye, well done. Your colors in the image are very good, with the density, contrast and saturation. Your cropping is excellent. This image has an excellent texture throughout. An excellent photograph. This deserves a 6 rating but the site won't let me give you one.
