I would say it's sorrow and grief. As you said, it's the eyes that make up the sculpture.
He seems to be surprised as to the amount of grief he is experiencing.
Very appropriate for your country now.
Totally unprepared but complete agony and pain.

The statue is interesting and you captured it in good light that makes it come to life. The angle of the light makes all of the details very visible and animates the statue. Good sharpness and composition.

Don't like the vignette, but this is personal and does not adversely reflect on the image.
