Wonderful shot. Can see every detail in the wing. Great composition which is hard to do when photographing a moving object. Good depth of field. I really like it.

I am using an expanded version of FAR's rating system for review. I would like to know your opinion.
1. Initial Impact: 5.5 Good capture, very dynamic shot.
2. Creativity of Presentation: 5.0 A bird in flight is more creative than a bird perched.
3. Color Harmony: 5.0 Nothing is disharmonious. Natural coloration. Rich tones.
4. Center of Intrest: 5.5 There is no where else to focus attention.
5. Technical Excellence: 4.5
a. Focus is right on the subject.
b. Depth of Field: Excellent, focused well from wing tip to wing tip. No real need to have a blurred backround.
c. Exposure: Looks like the histogram is shifted toward underexposure. The white portion of the wings have room to brighten while the dark underside is lacking detail and feather definition.
d. Rotation: not a factor here
6. Technique: 5.0
a. Rule of thirds: Ok but not a little too centered. A small crop or a slight backing off of the zoom might give a little space for moving the bird a little down to put him right on the bottom 1/3 line.
b. Cropping: Same as above. The picture is fine as is however.
c. Backround distraction: None. I like the little wave details.
d. Saturation/Contrast: Seems natural not pushed, good color intensity
e. Shooting Angle: Looks like you were on a high area shooting slightly down on this bird. Works for me.
7. Story Telling Ability 5.5 Thank you so much for describing your equipment and settings. I wish everyone would.
8. Lighting: From the strong shadow under the wing this was probably a sunny day. Leds me to believe further that the exposure was a little under.
Overall: Great stop action to freeze this bird in a great wing presentation. I shot using the 70-300mm a lot on water birds. Always wishing I could afford bigger glass for those long shots. Well done.

They are fascinating birds. Your focus is good, I like how you captured the feather detail. The natural contrast of it's feathers make for an interesting image. The blue heron is a large bird, I think I would have cropped the picture differently to bring higher in the frame. Thank you for sharing.
