Very beautiful lighting on the swan and water, and I love the reflections, the colors and the ripples in the water.

This is so beautiful. The swan's reflection really brings out the pink on its chest. The lighting and other colors are so bright and vivid. You've framed it perfectly. Your depth of focus is amazing. Well done!!!

This is a pleasant enough image of a swan. I like the reflection in the water. There are a few issues with it though. Unfortunately you have lost detail in both the highlights and the shadows here. Thus the feathers are blown out and we cannot see the swan's eye because the black on its face is too dark.

The photograph of the Swan looks to be a little too much contrast has been used as on my computer screen, it looks like a little bit has been lost from the image. Another suggestion would be to move the Swan a little more to the left as it seems to be almost place in the center.

Great job on this. The reflection is fantastic. Great colors. Focus is very sharp. Framing of scene is just right. Lighting is excellent. This is a VERY fine photograph.

There is a lovely reflection in the water and a nice pose of the swan. The time of day you shot this is hard to not get over exposure on the white.
This is a nice capture, but we cannot see the eyes and the white is blown out. I know how difficult it is to shoot white and swans.
A nice shot, but best time to get a perfect shot of him is dawn or dusk.

Thanks for not being too critical. I completelyy agree with everything you said, and next time your recommendations will be considered. If I can only shoot when it's sunny, would setting my white balance to cloudy help? Or maybe would the flash kind of smooth out the over exposure?
reply by Sange on 21-Sep-2013
I assume by flash you are talking about an on board flash, meaning one that came with camera. The answer is no. You will get more blow out.
Setting white balance to cloudy? No.. I manually set my white balance as I shoot. As the time of day changes..I reset that. Shooting white requires manual settings and a few tricks. I stand at different angles and I use my in camera histogram. Basically I go shooting at 8am till noon... then wait till 4 or 4:30pm for the sunset golden hours..as you grow in your work..you will see what works..I shoot a swan weekly... I never get blow out, because I shoot early am, rainy days or at dusk.
I would need to know the type of camera you use to help you more. :)

I use a high end point and shoot; Canon Powershot SX50..,with a 50x zoom. I think it's 12mp. I'm physically challenged and only have use of one arm, so fancy SLR would be difficult for me to operate. I like your later in the day idea.

Ok...I will look at settings on your camera and get back to you...

I really, really appreciate that, thanks!

Ok... page 116 in your manual.. metering method.
choose Evaluative ... it will automatically adjust exposure to match your shooting conditions.
You may want to try shooting in the sports mode when swan is moving..this will increase exposure time= shutter speed...if you want manual... shoot in TV mode..
Page 122 in manual... white balance..keep yours on auto.. you can press the display button and adjust with arrows...it will show you the shot at different levels.
Any questions.... personal message me here... OK?

This is lovely photography that you have produced. I am so enchanted with the sereneness of the majestic looking swan calmly moving in the rich blue rippled water, along with the swan's pristine mirror reflection.

I find it interesting you used mixed media. Showing ripple in water along with a reflection has always presented a challenge. Consider the Impressionists. You show a remarkable contrast of color and motion in this picture.
