Hi Lucien,

I think you did a wonderful job of showing the couls of winter these buffalo must endure. I can see snow on their head and back. I think pointillism with its grainy look adds greatly to the illusion of snowing. I think the further one is away from pointillisn image the more the intricate the subjecy becomes ro the eye. That's a compliment by the way! :o) This is painstaking work and YOU do it expertly!

Good Luck in the Contest!
:o) Helvi

Excellent pointillism. The bison are very well done with an enormous amount of nuance to create them. My favorite thing about this work are how you were able to create the shapes of the trees in the background through the snow. Amazing work.

I love the background because it does look like trees and bushes covered in snow and ice. Great job on the bison. Love the white area that looks like snow on them. Fantastic and very nice work!

You certainly did convey a cold blustery day for these two animals. Excellent subdued background with limited colors and highlights. Nice look at what these bison go through on an annual basis. Excellent job.

Super art work with such a splendid technique that the image radiates out of the line - super color choice, handsome composition, great detail work, super patience and creative skills - handsome softness and lighting - the blue clear background has a hidden face, somehow like a guardian - great job to remind us that these huge animals are so soft and should have the right to be on this earth for long time ahead

The grid method is indeed very effective in rendering these subjects to scale from the tip of their nostrils up to the curvatures of their hind legs.
The pointillist technique measures the determination, patience & perseverance of the artist.
I like the way he uses a few earth toned marker colors to convey the haziness of the two bisons as they seek refuge from the hailstorm. The blue colors along with the white areas depict the precipitation that falls from the sky in a form of ice pellets. The highlights are meticulously conceptualized as the uncolored areas where light falls on the head and back portions of the bulls.
Thank you so much Sir Lucien for sharing your expertise on this ink dots artwork.

    DicK Lee Shia,

    you are welcome!
a well written critique. Yes, the grid method is definitely a good way to see small area at a time and really get the proportions correct. Yes the limited pallet did help with the effects you described.

To me as an artist, all the formal aspects of painting, brush marks, colours, tones, layers of paint, surface texture, become means of making discoveries about the world.Your work is stunning. Speaks volumes about your skill and passion for pointillism. Good luck in the contest!
