I am a little cheating, but in legal realms. I usually make bunches of scratches on paper before I paint it digitally.

I like unicorns and this is so pretty. You have caught the features and expression well. They always have that proud look about them. Like the way that most of the markings go in the same direction make your eyes travel downwards.

Digital art works many ways in many techniques. In my case, I have a special program with which I am able to paint in traditional techniques, just that I move the brushes with my fingers on a mouse pad instead directly on a canvas. A little bit like finger painting.
