Thanks Howard, they are tiny around 1/8" (3mm) the largest of them so very hard to get clearly but have practiced again today and will see if it comes out better. They are also known as Baby Breath flowers. :) Mary

Hello Zilyram!

I do really like the composition you have used here and the subjects themselves are quite interesting. :)

I have rated this image a 3.5/5 stars. A 4/5 star is "Good - Requires Adjustments", unfortunately there are some parts of this image that could only really be adjusted by retaking the frame.

I have explained below the reasons for my rating:

1. When shooting close-up like this, there needs to be sharp focus on the subjects, which in this case are those white buds. The only area of focus that I can really find is the tip of that one small leave at about centre of the frame. Stopping down may have saved the missed focus. Something I would recommend when shooting macro, especially from a tripod, is to use your live view on the camera. This will accomplish two things. Number one it will lock up your mirror and you will not get any mirror vibration in the image, which can make a difference, especially at high magnification. Number two, you can zoom in with live view and really nail down your fine focus.

2. The lighting is off on this image. The background is very dark and then there are blow outs on one or two of the white blooms. Because you were on a tripod, I might have considered exposure bracketing with this shot. Hard to say how it would have worked, without actually doing it though. At the very least, some of this could have been adjusted in post processing, especially if you were shooting in RAW. A big part of presenting an image for display is the post processing.

I think too, if you were to play around with lighting (recover some shadows / lower highlights), you might find that the bottom two blooms are actually in sharper focus than they appear to be now. If that is the case and you upload a revised version that shows this, I would raise my rating to a 4/5)

Please do not take this the wrong way. From the sounds of it, you are new to macro and a 70% rating is not bad when practicing. You won't get any real help or progress, when people are telling you that this image has great lighting and focus... etc...

I wish you all the best with your macro experiences. :)

I see you took seriously the advice on odd numbers. A ver nice composition with good colors. The image does not appear as sharp as it might be considering the technique used. I would generally stop down several stops when using a tripod.

They are unique looking for sure. Like the dark background, good frame and focus and happy to see you are getting much needed rain. We are supposed to get some monsoon rains here this week-end. Hope we do.
