This is really a beautiful work of art. When I look at it, it looks like there is a person looking back at me behind her mask.
I enjoyed reading your artist's notes as well. Sometimes people wear masks to hide behind....to become someone else in a different reality. With a mask they no longer have to be what everyone expects them to be....they play a different role now... perhaps a stronger role than they are without it....perhaps more domineering, more vocal, more risk taker than without it....no longer the meek, forever doing what everyone else tells her to do....no longer bowing down her head never meeting your eyes....now she stares back at you unafraid. This work of art has so many stories to tell as you can see. I love that you kept your palette simple with just a few colors...white (for this purpose I consider it a color), gold, and then those red lips which actually look as if she managed to get some of her white makeup on her lips creating a slight smudge making it pinkish (lower left part of her lip). Thank you so very much for sharing. This was such a pleasure to view. Perfect entry for this particular contest.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful review. I believe many of us turn our own faces into masks in daily life, not because they are weak, but because they want not bother others with their personal problems, which might be many. Who want to admit to illness our to cry in public. Surely not many. The mask in my painting is not make up on the face, but a full-mask which is hold on a stick in front of the face, similar to masks we see at Madigrass and Carnaval and sometimes at costume parties. :o)

I love the stylized patterns on Venetian masks so this is right up my alley. (I also have a four-panel series of paintings called "Masks".) The details on the cap and eyes are well done. Only problem I have with it is that I can barely see the outline of the face or tell where the hat ends and the background begins. Thanks for sharing.

The face is not visible in this, only parts of the eyes. The hat does not end but is the background. Part of the white heat hangs over the decor. The vague outlines of the heat and the mask are intentional. I wanted an appearance between a mask and a real face so the viewer does not just look, but also think about the meaning of this painting.
