This looks like a familiar favorite place...perhaps in a different season on a different day in a different year. :D

This scene is very artistic. First...I do love B&W. Second..the slope of the ground has given your viewer the challenge to find other things beside the center tree to check your leveling....at least those of us who are inherent and chronic 'straighteners'. These long shadows have given you an outstanding scene to play with from when you first picked up your camera to when you pushed copy from your post processing. I always wonder how a black and white evolves with other people as I am usually surprised with what can happen when simply pulling colors..like green and red and orange..pulling them in and out...and of course the contrast.

Your choices are excellent in this one. Your blacks are deep leaving your snowy shadows to use the various shades of gray. And your whites are subtle..with actually the brightest being in that upper left corner...as if that is where the brightest sun is coming through.

A beautiful and artistic scene. Best of luck in the contest!

Wow, what a memory you have for photos. I did take this subject the day after Christmas last year. More snow and no shadows. Today I noticed the long shadows, while reading at the lib. and thought it would make a good b/w.

We see a colored world in our every day activities. So our eyes focus in on color when we see images also. Often it is the color(s) that enhance an image, think color wheel. But with b/w it is mostly contrast, form and shapes that make the image. So for us geometrically (and architects) thinking people these images are appealing. Maybe not so much for people that don't think geometrically and are more into poetry!

Thanks again for your in depth reviews, I look forward to them the minute I hit the send key! :-()

You are most welcome Allan....you found the term I was looking for...point on! geometrically and architects..... Absolutely not claiming to be proficient in either... but not good at poetry. Have your ever taken that test that assigns you to a color? Mine always put me in the corner with science and poly sci teachers...not the art corner...even tho I taught music...hmmmm.

b/w does work well in this, has an air of starkness in it,not sure about the slpoe in the background, sort of takes your eyes of the benches which I think are great, thinking maybe crop the top of,but sure about that either, either way its a well spotted scene...brian

A very nice winter landscape posted here! Your decision to convert to black and white has worked out pretty well indeed. Your nice composition provides a very enjoyable view of the scene. The image is well exposed and has good sharpness. Well done and good luck!
