I'm so glad you didn't crop it! It's wonderful to see both together. The colors are beautifully sharp and the dof is great. I appreciate you tell about the "subjects" also. Thanks for sharing. Happycamper

I am super glad you did keep them together as a couple. I think this may be the first time I have ever had the opportunity to see a Mandarin duck. What a beautiful sight. The colors are just magnificent. Even the female does not look that bad (females always look far less than their male counterparts). The shot is absolutely perfect. Taking it at their level makes it even more special. The color of the entire photo, not to mention the two subjects, is lovely. The close cropping is excellent. The focus is outstanding. It's great that is was selected for the monthly contest. That itself is an honor.
The best of luck to you.

Thank you very much! It was the first I have seen them too. They do have some gorgeous colors. I have hear that they are similar to wood ducks, which is one I have not seen. Thank you again for your in depth review and comments, I appreciate it!

I've never even heard of this species of duck before. Now I'm privileged to "meet" two lovely specimens. Thank you for introducing me to these beautiful ducks. This is a lovely photograph.

Great capture of the two beautiful Ducks, Grace and I'm glad you didn't separate them. They are both so lovely in different ways - the proud colourful male looking protectively at his smaller more delicately coloured mate. Very good lighting and focus showing excellent clarity. Lovely composition. Suzanne

I thought it would be better to have them as a couple, I just wasn't liking the amount of space between them, but it isn't too bad :) Thank you for having a look!

Oh no Grace...I am so happy you didn't crop the hen out of the photo. While I would have to agree that the male is one of the most interestingly colored of the Ducks his mate is wonderful in her own way. I particularly like the speckled breast. Wow but what an impressive pair they make.

OK- your photo. Such perfect crisp sharp focus!! Just spot on. Your little pair is just beautifully detailed from tip to toe. The satin-like finish of his feathers especially is well shown. Colors are well captured...natural....nothing over-done. You let them speak for themselves. Very nice.

I wish the background had been a little different. I am torn about giving this six stars and it is ONLY b/c the background keeps distracting me ever so slightly from this beautiful pair of birds. It is a tip-top shot of them Grace and your post has excellent notes as well.

Thank you Deborah! I just wasn't liking the amount of distance between them but I knew I had to leave them both in the scene. I agree too that the water is a bit distracting. Thank you very much for your in depth comments and the high marks :)

ah-ha...it is water behind them Grace. I wondered what it was. I didn't mind the distance between them at all...so they weren't all lovey-dovey...lol Welcome for the review.

Very beautiful duck couple that you have captures in this photo most excellently. Many intense details that show off all the unbelievable colors in both the male and female duck's feather as well as the pairs quiet gentle manor. Very lovely photo that I would love to have on my wall.

What a handsome pair for you to have framed. I've always been quite drawn to the beauty of these unique ducks. Such beautiful color and design found on their plumage. Love the rich detail and lighting.

Comment from Lucien van Oosten

I think the male pops and the colors there are good, he stands out very predominately from the washed out background. I do think the lighting overall is off. I think the female lacks that same boldness of colors, which is natural, but which unfortunately makes her blend into that background too much.
She looks faded and lackluster in coloration, like the lighting was off slightly, which to me detracts from the overall impact of the image. I like the idea, but by the pose angle of the shot it splits the composition up, and it lacks completeness, seems split right down the middle visually, interferes with the flow, or better stated cohesiveness. Nice subjects, just need to work on the things suggested to make it 5 image.

Thank you for your comments. I had considered cropping the female out entirely but decided to leave them as a couple. Thanks again!

Grace, this is perhaps the best Wood duck shot I have ever seen!

Your vision here is just that, a beautiful vision.

Perfect in clarity, presentation and overall perfect visual. So well done. Proud of you! Sange is the best teacher :)
