Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Your diagonal placement makes this tight crop work. What makes this a standout capture is your white balance Control that far to many here get wrong and make endless excuses for or try to hide in mixed media creations.
I find what makes this so special are two things, your sharp focus and your use of man made light.
The Peony appears to be kissed by the moons glowing light showing her off in the most lovely way. The bonus of the rain drops is the cherry on top of this beauty.
Fine capture, skilled manual settings and great POV.
Wall hanging worthy piece Doc.
A fine photo if a white flower with subtle hints of blush pink and yellow.
Well done ;)

Well HUGE smile here for that very wonderful review Sange! In my mind's eye I knew exactly how I wanted these to look...wasn't sure I'd get it exactly the way I wanted w/ my flashlights but I did and thank you so much for noticing. Just love getting the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! ...and don't mind the gold star either...lol So thank you sooo much for both. A calendar page most definitely for 2018, yes??

Beautiful shot! It doesn't look as big in the photo. Your method works, the flower really stands out in the dark. The pink and yellow in the leaves is nice, as are the tiny (or not so) drops of dew.

I cut it and put it in a vase on the wood stove Bill. Filled the vase all by itself....and absolutely filled the house w/ the best aroma.....oh yummy smell...lol The water drops were left over I think from it raining earlier in the day. Always happy to have you check out one of my posts and thank you so much for a lovely review Bill and the shiny extra star!!

I wouldn't think something white could be flamboyant as well, but this peony surely is flamboyant. Silver-silk made from moonlight. The whole looks like a painting. Its a tight framed close up, but with nice perspective and depth to it, due to the diagonal view.

I thought it made a good challenge for me Cleo...photograph the big, fluffy-petaled white PEONY at night w/o over exposing any of the white. The Coyotes howling so loudly slowed me down a bit but I was VERY pleased w/ the final image so thank you very much for the wonderful review and extra gold star. I do REALLY appreciate it.

You surely got what you attempted. Maybe those coyotes weren't bad guys. Maybe they just cast that special mood over the the painting with their howl.
reply by the author on 05-Jul-2017
lol...you may be right Cleo. When I first moved here they frightened the hell out of me. Now, after 17 years I barely pay attention to them....EXCEPT when I'm outside in the gardens after dark. Never go outside WITHOUT my dog!!
reply by cleo85 on 06-Jul-2017
Well. their howl can be frightening, but I always thought it sounds sad, like wanting something they cannot get. [I wrote accidently painting in my last answer. Sorry for the mistake, but the photo just speaks to the painter in me.]

not to worry Cleo. I took it as a compliment.

It was unconsciously given, but yes, it was a compliment. :o)

oh I'm not surprised that this has received an all time best status..what stunning sharpness and composition as the flowers focusing gradually diffuses in to the distance allowing for the foreground flower to really stand out and as its so detailed its glorious structure lights up and becomes extremely appealing to the eye of the viewer..a def six from me ..yet again ...stunning

awww...you are very kind Neil! My eyes were crossing trying to make sure all those ruffled petals were as crisp as I wanted them to be....lol...WHILE I was trying to shine the light in the correct place. Then the coyotes started howling...OMG....too funny. I'm sure I was a sight. So you are just a doll to give it such a wonderful review Neil AND a gold star! Thank you so very much.

Deborah,
A beautiful picture of this pink tipped White Peony in the soft light of you torch glowing out from it's dark background. Artistic composition, framing & soft subdued lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.
Just one thing a flower does not move as you click the shutter so why did you cut off the lower petals?

I was more interested in having all ...or most of the petals of the main blossom in focus and sharp Susan....and you're wrong actually....flowers move ALL the time. Perhaps not as much as your birds but they DO move....during the day and at night...doesn't matter....slightest breeze ruffles petals. Do appreciate you taking a look at it though. Thank you.

This is a magnificent photo. I love the detail, color, composition and contrast. I can feel the soft petals, smell the fragrant blooms and touch the raindrops.
The lighting is wonderful showing so much of the blossom against the dark background. Well done!

This is absolutely gorgeous in absolute white. White appears like silk chiffon from a land of Cathay. Everything sharp revealing all the intricate folds that are so asymmetrical. Framing is perfect and love it.

Hey Deb! Wow, this is truly a beautiful shot!

the dark mysterious forces of your flashlight :) really brings this one up to pop on page.

I love the moody scene that is extra special with amazing clarity in almost every petal.

The dark background is glorious.... such a vision Deb. This is just great.

Well hello there Dale. Been missing you. Did you get all moved?? I know it must have been a hassle.....and something I do not EVER want to do...lol....for one thing I would never want to leave my gardens. At any rate Dale it is really good to 'see' you again. Thank you so very much for that lovely review and extra gold star. You are most kind.

Excellent night time capture of the beautiful white Peony, Deborah - I only have pink ones in my garden but this is stunning. I like the way it goes diagonally across the frame and the black background works perfectly. Excellent lighting and focus showing incredible detail in the twists and curls of the petals - they look as if they're made of satin. Lovely composition. Suzanne

As gorgeous as this big white PEONY is during the day-time Suzanne it is even lovelier at night-time I think...and exactly why I wanted to photograph it after dark....so I really appreciate that wonderful review you've given it....and the shiny gold star too. Aren't these guys just the best in your gardens??? I spend a LOT of time in the PEONY bed. Anyway....lol....Thank you so much. You're a doll.
