I think these are some of the most gorgeous flowers because of how big their blooms get. You have achieved perfect lighting on these guys and have captured the lovely colors so well. I enjoy how the texture is soft with crisp and sharp definition to the petal edges which is very attractive. The tiny water droplets look cool too :)

I was a little skeptical that my flashlights would do this one justice Grace so I REALLY appreciate the wonderful review you've given it.....and the gold star you shared. Definitely going to get a page in my 2018 calendar! Thank you very much!

awww...you're very kind. Don't believe I've ever used a white flower in one of my calendars before....will be pretty on a colored calendar page I think.

I can smell it...so real, natural and bright. The petals like a marble, but full of colors. I just adore the black background. Amazing shot, thanks for sharing.

One of THE most aromatic PEONIES I grow in my gardens Natalia..... So pleased you appreciate my night-time black background as well. This big, beautiful blossom is pretty during the day but I really wanted to show the dichotomy of white blossom and black background. I appreciate you checking it out and thank you so much for sharing a gold star w/ it.

This is an interesting shot. The shot of the flowers in the dark makes it an interesting viewing. Good framing, soft colours makes it interesting viewing!

Thank you Seshadri. Easy to photograph this guy during the day but thought it would be more interesting in the dark. Do appreciate you checking it out.

O my goodness!,, this is award-winning! I would hang this on my wall and several rooms just so I could see it when I walked through. This is gorgeous Deb. As big as a soccer ball wow! Your camera skills have outdone themselves on this one. A framer in a gallery!!!!!!

Most definitely going to be included in my 2018 calendar Becky! Just love that you would hang it in more than one room....lol...so you could "see it when you walked through" That is a wonderful compliment. Thank you so much.

This huge blossom just comes to life once the sun goes down. I was a bit worried about photographing it w/ my flashlights but then was deee-lighted w/ the image afterwards so I really do appreciate the wonderful review AND the shiny gold star. Thank you so much Becky.

nice lighting and angle of shot, but the focus is a bit soft and this takes from the initial impact

good use of the frame diagonal

thanks for sharing

Some people are finding it wayyyyy too dark Sean.....lol... hmmnnn....I am really surprised b/c I was actually more concerned about it being over-exposed from the two flashlights I used. Anyway, thank you so much for checking it out....always love getting a 'Good Show' from you.

Yeah,I figured that it might garner a few 'too dark' comments from the peanut gallery,Deb! It's just 'different' because of the low light level Personally I really like it! : )
reply by the author on 03-Jul-2017
lol...yup Sean....some in the 'peanut gallery' don't seem to understand the 'white at night' bit. That's OK....I can deal...lol

I think quite a few people just feel like they HAVE TO complain about something or other,Deb! I just got another one of those four and a half star ratings with no reason given for it regarding my drawing of the Dilophosaurus! I realize that they prob'ly DON'T LIKE drawings of gnarly prehistoric animals ( compared to drawings of 'nice' subjects or 'bee on a flower' photos ) but WOW! Are they AFRAID to tell me why they 'low balled' the drawing? That's just annoying!
reply by the author on 03-Jul-2017
I completely agree Sean. I try to remind them that they need to rate on technical merits NOT on whether they simply LIKED or DIDN'T like a particular image.

I guess I probably just get too obsessive about my work or about FAR itself,Deb,but it really bothers me when people do that to me! : (
I've drawn literally THOUSANDS of images that I personally consider to be of less than excellent quality but I've never posted any of those poor things here on FAR so if someone sees something that they honestly think 'needs improvement' in any of the drawings that I do post here I wish they'd simply 'have the sand' to tell me what they feel that the problem is and not just attempt to 'baffle me with b.s.' and run away after slapping a crummy rating on my work! That's just INSULTING!
reply by the author on 04-Jul-2017
lol...'baffle you w/ bs' I like that Sean...but the run away par. Yes, I know. I've politely questioned a reviewer after a 'baffle w/ bs' review...and gotten no response. Oh well...their loss I figure. Happy 4th! Hope you're eating well today.

'I hear ya',Deb! I've tried to politely ask 'Why?' to people who give 'No Explanation' type low ball ratings many times but they simply never answer!
Perhaps I'm just being a 'crotchety old bastard'
but I don't even bother responding to any 'review' giving one of my drawings a less than five star rating anymore! It's like 'why bother?'
I don't really want to 'threaten' or 'scare' anybody ( although I guess my Nudes 'scare' some reviewers a LOT! Lol! ) but WOW! I'd genuinely like to know WHY someone thinks that a drawing ( usually one that's gotten several Five Star-and even a Six Star-rating ) doesn't look good! AH WELL! : (

While this is a gorgeous flower and I read your notes about capturing it at night, I think it's really too dark. I like the angle of the flower-good composition, but I just can't get past the darkness.

This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.

Well it IS night-time in the photo Lauren....lol the whole point was a WHITE flower against the BLACK night sky. I have no problem w/ a reviewer docking points if they think there's a technical issue w/ my image. Can't quite tell from your review if that's the problem or if you simply don't like the white flower against the dark background.....in which case it's a subject issue rather than a technical one. At any rate....thank you for checking it out.

BB,

How appropriate. I just sent this quote to another here on FAR: "The greatest is the one who is least observed, the one that goes about unnoticed. It is only through error that one calls attention to ones self." My flower, a "spacer". Here is the rest of one of my favorite quote from Thomas Merton: "The logic of worldly success rests on a fallacy: the strange error that our perfection depends on the thoughts and opinions and applause of other men! A weird life it is, indeed, to be living always in somebody else's imagination, as if that were the only place in which one could at last become real!" Only appropriate that Steve's Flower be used as a "spacer", a conduit and connection between those things that catch the eye, allowing the transition to be seamless. Not to be contemplated but to carry the imagination from one scene to another. I have not experienced such profound insight as I have at this moment. Perhaps there are Larger Forces at work.

Wonderful capture my Dearest Friend and fellow sojourner. I will save this always as a reminder ~ BB

I have been attempting to respond to this for two days Steve and every time I start my Internet pops off. In fact, just noticed it's off AGAIN!!! One thing- one HUGE thing I do not agree w/ in your review is the bit about Steve's Flower not to be contemplated on it's own. Sooooo wrong BB. This spectacular white blossom between the two burgundy ones actually overshadows the darker ones. I barely notice the burgundy ones when this shrub is in full bloom....and I was never a 'white flower' type of girl......but I am now.

I want you to know that I never do my 'flashlight hold' w/o laughing to myself and thinking of your jokes re: my methods. Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and kind review.....and, of course for the extra sparkle. Now I will save this response and pray my Internet connection pops back on SOON!!

A very nicely composed shot. The flowers do seem to glow with a light from within which gives them beautiful subtle colors even though the blossom is white.

I was surprised mm by the subtle shades I got at night-time....wondered if it was partly due to my two flashlights.. The blossom is absolutely white in the daylight.....but much more lovely in the dark. Do always appreciate having you review one of my pieces. Thank you for the very good review you've given this guy.
