Excellent shot. Beautifully composed and cropped. The desaturation adds that needed bit of an old look too it. The clarity and details are pristine and make the young man's expression even more poignant. A superior piece.

This is a poignant capture...not only due to your subject but to your treatment of this composition. Your perspective is perfect..with only what you want your viewer to see. Your light and shadows have made this appear to be at night when a soldier may be sitting and wondering if he will live to see another day and what the meaning of it all is. I like the color limitations you have used in your post processing. That bit of pink in his facial features accents his youth and makes this memory of history quite sad. Thank you for your excellent notes as well. A pleasure to view!

When Longstreet's column entered Pennsylvania, a young woman asked of one of the Confederate soldiers; "How do you like the fair state of Pennsylvania?". To which he replied; "Right fine Ma'am, but it don't come up to home in my eyes."
You have captured the essence of pre battle very well. The expression of anticipation is so telling of this young reenactors eyes.
Camera technique puts the focus on the young soldier, with emphasis on his facial continence.
Framing the attention on him and including the artifacts, flag & weapons in the background enhances the story.
Contrast from the low light exposure is marvelous.

The tight cropping and the format works well, and the boy has got a fine placement within the frame. I think it is a great looking and well taken photo, and with a very good DOF.
