Gorgeous! You have truly captured the intimation of Autumn in these colors. It is my favorite time of year. And gives this Swallowtail just enough time to 'beef up' as you say...on the late blooming flowers that still hold plenty of nutrients for them. An excellent story here....from your neck of the North!

Your photography skills are showing my friend...both in the technical shot and in the composition. Your colors are glorious. Your details are clear. And your light and shadows have been caught exactly where they will show the beauty in this guy and the center of the Cosmos..( I think). The brilliance of that orange flower seems to be reflecting on the bit of orange on the butterfly....defining the veins in his wings even more. That powdery blue is the key though..to defining those lower wings. Beautiful.

Your dof is perfection as well....setting the scene and explaining why this butterfly was lured (fishing term) to this patch of beautiful sustenance. How's that for poetic?

a wonderful macro capture of this black swallowtail butterfly sipping nectar on the vibrant orange zinnia (I think) flower; outstanding sharp details;

A superb close up shot of this beautiful Swallowtail butterfly, captured from an excellent angle with great clarity, almost perfectly side on giving the viewer a good profile view of the colours, patterns and intricate details of the butterfly as it drinks nectar from this vivid orange flower, which contrasts wonderfully with the the butterfly itself, as does the background of blurred green and patches of orange, which helps to accentuate the colour and beauty of the butterfly even further. A fantastic shot and great contender for the competition, best of luck! :)
