Been looking at all the contests I missed voting in Allan while my internet was out for over three weeks. Congratulations on winning the contest w/ this one....would have definitely gotten my vote as well.

Stunning colors.....but nothing over done. I really like that. Exposure is spot on and your focus is amazingly crisp. You've presented this ominous looking creature really well....lol I can understand why it might make some young children cry! Nicely put together....deserving winner for sure.

Oh and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Deborah

Thanks much for taking the time to come back and look at this image. I did process in HDR, hoping for a dramatic and scary rendition of it. Glad you computer is back on line again, hard to be without it.

Don't you just love HDR Allan? It was perfect for this image and happy I went and had a look.

Yes, HDR is great. My Sony 6300 can do it in camera. Otherwise bracketing works well also. Just not to overdue it 🙄.

My Olympus can do it in camera as well Allan but I completely agree. In fact, I've found w/ photography that there is always a fine line between improving an image and over doing it....in all aspects, not just HDR. You got it exactly right here.

OH GAWD he's ugly.

Your HDR work is just perfect, not overcooked but punchy. Is your horizon line level?

Did you shoot this with "our" beloved Sony @6300?

Just a really great entry and that ominous sky adds to a sinister look, yet the colours remind us of playfulness.

Nice

Hey, thanks for the helpful review. Yes, this was with the Sony, which has become my go to camera of choice.
I laughed when I read your "sinister" comment, as that was the effect I was trying for with the clouds.
Also, nice call on the horizon, I got out my level and made it right.

Woah.... 16feet!!!! My youngest grandchildren would LOVE it!! LOL!! They may say, "That looks like you, Nana!" at least the posture! Ha~

Your sky sets the mood here...completely! Very, very artistic! And your vibrant orange/red is perfectly controlled vs the remaining colors.. The overall bg scene is beautiful alone. But this lovely pirate looking figure blends right in...thanks to the photographer!~ Really, really good clarity; excellent framing; and perfect use of light and shadows...with the shadows playing point guard for the effects. Awesome!! Best of luck in the contest!

What a great review. I appreciate the time it takes to give a thoughtful response, not just an attaboy!
It was a fun capture, fun processing, and fun contest.

    You have "brave" grandkids!! :)

16 feet, that height could even scare me, but the scarecrow seems safely secured by the metal wheel behind it. It is not on usual outfit for a scarecrow, I think. He looks like a pirate rather than a farmer. Interesting is that there is a Dream Catcher on his side. Those are native protection charms against bad dreams. Good that you have it included in your photo. On the whole, your photo says a lot about modern culture, where the purpose of scarecrows has changed from protection of farmland and gardens to an object of Halloween fun. Your photo has excellent sharp detail and a good color palette. The gray sky emphasizes the red fabric.. Good luck for the contest.

Thanks for your comments and review. On this scarecrow hill, there are at least 15 other scarecrows. So you are right, they are no conditioner an art form instead of a useful agricultural tool. Althought animals are smart. When they see the same item day after day without moving, they seem to catch on that it is not a threat and just ignore it. Maybe they are mocking US!

    You're most welcome.
Animals are smart. If all parts are still thy ignore items, but if the wind moves parts or parts reflect their eyes cannot fasten the movement, so they stay away.

This is indeed a huge scarecrow, but does it work ? I suppose birds get used even to this one. I like very much the background as well and the grey sky is perfect for the colors in the outfit of the scarecrow. It is therefore standing out in an excellent way.

Your photo is also very sharp and it is indeed clear and well defined details to be seen in every part of the scarecrow. It is nothing wrong with the exposure either.

The HDR work has especially good effect on the sky, and I also think the cropping is working really well. The scarecrow has got a good placement a bit off to the left. Indeed a well taken and great looking entry for this contest, and I wish you luck.
