All birds do this for a few reasons.
It is called Thermoregulation.
This is a common bird behavior to observe with herons because of body temperature regulating.
Herons that live in cooler parts of North America may be observed standing in full sun, with their wings down. This is one way for them to control their body temperatures. When you see them in this pose with their mouth open they are trying to cool off like a dog does when panting. With mouth closed they are sunbathing.
You captured a nice pose showing the hint of blue on their wings.
I love the heart like shape his wings spread immitates.
Nice find and capture of a Great Blue Sunbathing.

thanks a lot Sandra for your great comments and explanations; it is the first tim I see our herons doing this; the temperature was around 15° C.....
we have only grey herons in Europe...

Yes... Grey...blue heron...same...just called different names...you can see the light cornflower blue on the wings clearly.

The Great Egret.. some call the Great White..
    Just Egret..
I don't get bogged down by name..color of birds..
Our herons have same behaviors only difference each one adapts to their environment.
    But they are same colors.

Hysterical, who knew. I don't think I have ever seen a bird of any kind look like that. Great photo that few will ever get to see of the real thing. Love these exquisite birds. Thanks for sharing and putting a smile on my face. Susan

LOL - I really wonder how the bird managed to do this with its wings. I am not even sure if we see the bird from the front or from behind. It is even stranger that it kept this pose for so long.

Your photo is sharp and it is clear and well defined details to be seen in every part of the bird, and the exposure is just spot on.

The cropping has worked so well and the bird has got a fine placement within the frame. Indeed a funny and well taken photo with a very good DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

You are most welcome, and I still don't understand how the bird managed to bed the wings into this position. LOL

Wow - this is a fantastic pose! I have never seen these guys do this before. It looks like he is warming the undersides of his wings. Very nice capture! The details of the face stand out nicely too.

Too funny. Your title is brilliant. This goofy little guy looks as if he is in 2nd position about to do a plie. His head turned sideways is elegant and so is his stance. This has to win. Love it.
