It is amazing that people are able to build houses made from soil and straw with several levels. Even more amazing is, that those houses are cling to the ragged hills, between rock and landslides. A harsh life in a harsh environment, for sure. You teach us a good lesson about human geniality and adaptability. Your photo is well focused, showing good detail throughout. How the green canyon is zigzagging through the hills is interesting. The zigzag of green leads our view into the depth of the photo. I assume that the houses next to the green, are the oldest part of town. It looks as if there is a wall and a gate. The shadows behind those buildings emphasize them. Your lighting is excellent. I don't know if I would have realized those buildings without the shadow. Their color indeed melts into the environment.

Its always amazing to me to see how people live in harmony with nature using natural material. We, in the western urban environment with our concrete and steel have not a clue as to the beauty of living humbly and within our means.
This shot is timeless and captures a nice balance of past and present.
Quite lovely and well done.
I think the cropping on the left could have been a little closer, but overall its a wonderful image that captures the subject quite well.
I love the meandering green that leads the viewer on a journey through the center only to discover that the dwellings blend right in with the surrounding hillsides.
Nice.

This is a difficult one to judge or view,i agree its part of the Moroccan landscape and therefore shows off some of the country as such.
But as the title suggests a village I think it needed to be a tad more prominent in this,still it does fit the contest as such,so thanks for entering it...Brian

An image with great interest and culture. Well captured. Love seeing your adventures and travels. Great lighting shading and color. Well framed.
I don't think I would like to live there it looks very treacherous to get around but a beautiful place to visit and learn about.
Good luck in the contest!

Hi there and thanks for sharing this amazing photo of the Village tucked into the Atlas Mountains. Its textural value is really quite incredible. The use of natural materials to create these buildings is a feat all its very own. The work entailed in constructing houses from both mud ( or soil) and straw requires lengthy manual labour and I would imagine these folk don't have access to fancy tools to aid them. Visually... its a work of art. The angle used to capture your scene is perfect. It shows well, the terrain of barren mountains and rocky hillsides where the earth seems to be dry and crumbling, with loose rocks making their way down the slopes. Perhaps this effect has arisen from areas used to break up the ground to obtain material for the construction of these homes. The valley between the hills must gather any run off water in times of rain. The green growth most likely has been planted for vegetation by the folk who dwell here. Aesthetically you would scarcely recognize that this village exists as it truly blends with the environment. Indeed the builders of these structures have learned their techniques over time and the trade is passed down from each generation to the next. When viewing closely I see there are homes scattered all through those rocky slopes.. such an amazing feat and in fact, mud homes are well insulated from weather conditions. I wonder what their mode of transport is in this village. most likely by foot.. as there doesn't appear to be enough vegetation to feed animals.. though I do notice in the foreground there is a very green lush patch of ground hidden amongst the foliage.. which quite possibly could be some crop they are growing. All credit to these village folk for their ability to utilize what exists around them to create their homes and probably thrive on a simple and practical lifestyle.. Thanks for sharing this incredible photo that is inspiring and awakening on so many levels. Your scene is perfectly exposed with excellent lighting, bringing much clarity into my mind's eye as I peruse the view. It is well balanced and visually appealing .There is so much to be said for this unique and noteworthy existence. It has been an absolute pleasure and joy to review.

    thanks a lot mel for your fantastic and so detailed comments;;
    the green is of course an oasis: they grow there what they need;
    their mode of transport is the donkey....

Yes, this village does appear to blend perfectly into the background. The lines and details and darker color are really what makes it stand out.
A very nice desert scene with most interesting facts about the homes of the village.

I think that since you titled this piece Village in the Atlas that you need to enlarge it and crop it so the viewer does not have to search so hard for the village houses. You are correct that they blend with the background mountains but you can still show that and the village with a better crop.

    thanks; I wanted to show how it is surrounded by mountains

    I got that, but for me the buildings blending in was the focal point. Just one person?s opinion.

How interesting and unusual. Yes the houses blend in but this makes the overall images flat I suggest crop closer, leave out much of the left upper quadrant. Then increase the saturation of the reds and increase the contrast. Fill the image with what you want the viewer to see. It is a great view.

    The object of letting someone critique your work is for them to suggest how they think it might be improved. Obviously you love what you captured but maybe you might like it better. Try it you may like it but obviously you do not have to ,JMO.

    what I think is interesting is the vilage surounded by high mountains; if I crop most of the left, it will look like many villages at the foot of a mountain: not exactely the same impression;
reply by Robert Davis on 09-May-2018
    Yes I got the idea but I see it differently. Whenever I critique a image, i extract it any try my ideas. Obviously I do not use the images for anything else. If you like I can send you my edit of your image before I erase it. I also brought out some detail from the shadows and highlights. Will need to use email

    of course, I agree to see; I don't edit my pics except cropping, leveling....as I did during 60 years before the digital era;...
    I just like nature as it is;

You are right, the houses have the same colors as the surroundings, but they are still standing out well because of the green vegetation surrounding. Indeed a remarkable place which you have pictured really well.

Your photo is sharp showing clear and well defined details, and also the exposure is very good. I also like the nice and natural colors.

The trees makes for a fine leading line up to the village, and the format and framing works so well. It is a great looking and well taken photo with an excellent DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.
