Lovely close up of this beautiful White Carnation, Deborah - I like how the night light has shown all the different colours in the petals. Love how you filled the frame with this. Excellent lighting and focus showing great detail in the intricate twists and curls of the petals. Lovely composition. Suzanne

The physics of light and how we perceive color never ceases to fascinate me.

The intense light of day gives us the crisp, bright white of purity we see pinned in the lapel of a pimply faced kid on his way to his first prom or as the boutonnière of young man nervously watching his future come down the aisle - that's day time.

But in the night time the real face of the carnation comes through, subtle hints of pink, lavender and sometimes even gold. Why? - You may ask does the carnation hide this varied side of its personality.

It's the fault of the light. The low wavelengths of low intensity light are mostly absorbed by the white color, thus allowing the secondary hues to show through - enough physics.

Lovely low light capture, High detail in the petals and just the hint of softer colors underneath.

I like how you filled the frame with the blossoms.

When I taught X-Ray Processor maintenance to my X-ray Students I would bring in a bouquet of carnations. I would hand each a blossom and instruct each to gently sniff the flower. Then I would tell them to remember the scent of the carnation, because that is exactly what cross contaminated developer and fixer smell like.

Ahhh, the good-ol-days ... OMP

The way we perceive things is what amazes ME OMP. The brain was my area of study ....more so the physiology of how it works our body but perception became a sub-interest in graduate school. LOVED your 'daylight' examples as well as the
thought of you passing out flowers to your X-Ray students to teach them about a scent.....lol Very interesting guy you are OMP. Thank you for having a look at my new piece here and for the fascinating discussion. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

A beautiful shot with gorgeous colors. I like the detail in the foreground blossom and think the soft rendering of those behind it give this a bit of an impressionistic look.

Well I don't mind that at all MM. Very apt way to describe it actually. Thank you....and thank you for having a look at my new piece and giving it such a fine review.

So, that is Diane with a lisp? You know I have to come up with a smart remark of some kind. Just would be right if I didn't.

I love the image. It is so well focused and the shadows are perfect. Great work, as usual.

LOL...you are so right Paul....it just would NOT seem right. Have to tell you though- this was a VERY creative smarty-pants remark....lol Took me a minute to figure it out. I'm a tad slow today huh?? Made me laugh out loud once I did. Thank you...and for the lovely review too. Brightened things up here you did!

This looks edible.... kind of like flower shaped marshmallows...lightly roasted. I think I can even smell them!

This is a very unique coloration and a very beautiful flower. I too hop it comes back this year....after the violent winter you had.

Your night shots are such fun to view. Have you ever had any critters out there observing you? The flower in the lower right almost looks like a little, smiling critter.

Beautiful work, Deb....a delight to view.

Oh Becky I can't imagine all the animals that must watch me traipsing around my gardens at night....lol They must be used to the 'crazy lady' w/ the camera and light strapped to her forehead (that one lets me see where I'm stepping) ONLY thing that ever chases me inside is occasionally when the coyotes start howling....and there sounds like a LOT of them....CLOSE...lol I've called it a night several times when THAT happens. You are just a sweetheart for being so generous w/ this one. YOU definitely brightened up my afternoon. Thank you so much for the really fun review too. Big smiles here my dear friend.

Your night light continues to do magical things, Deborah. All kinds of shadows and nuances of color show up. The tight composition works really well since it all about the petals and the one distinct center is enough and perfect. Hope they do come back! Ed.

Try as I might I am never able to photograph a single DIANTHUS blossom Ed.....they are very 'chummy' w/ each other so I typically give in and photograph as much of the 'gang' as I can fit into my lens nicely....lol Thank you for the really lovely review (you got my framing EXACTLY btw) and if they come back this season you know I will photograph them again. Fingers crossed.

I suppose I am wrong with the vague thought I have in my brain that those blooms are actually glowing? Your fine full composition gives us an enjoyable look at them. Nicely done!
