Hi Daphne, Thisis kinda haunting. First off your horizon line is excellent. I would like more ocean in this as you did it so well. The horse and rider are superb with the horse peeking around!!! The prison is intriguing with the bird hovering above! I like this a lot...

Thank you very much! Reviews are an interesting phenomenon the way people view art so differently. I had one reviewer comment that he was not sure he liked the ocean -- I wanted to understand why but he never got an answer back. Thanks for balancing your review the other way so I can grasp that this must be a matter of opinion somehow. I could easily remove it since this is digital. The ocean and horse are based on a photo of me riding just like that along the shore on a horse. Another horse, not the one I was riding that day, liked to look back at me like that. Everything on the left side of the rider is symbolic though -- more or less. The leaning cross is actually supposed to represent my absurd father's "psychic antenna." He was always designing and planning to install it on mountains to pick up (God?) or who knows. He started out doing good deeds for the poor people of Baja Mexico, then well, a very long, 33 year story followed that ended badly... This life gave me an unusual background from which to create art anyway! I hate writing due to eye problems and other issues, but have done a lot of that too... I prefer art and looking at colors... Have a great day! Daphne Oberon

I like this perspective and the beautiful colors. The symbolism is apparent when you read the notes but I am not so sure I like that shoreline along the right side.

Could you explain about the shoreline? The perspective, that it is there at all? My unbalance parents stuck me on an otherwise uninhabited island for three years with horses -- there and elsewhere I spent a lot of time riding along the shore just like this -- that is what I based that part on...

That there is symbolism is clear at first sight. The isolation and desolation of the lonely rider is obvious, but other symbols only got realized after reading the comments. I am not sure of the eagle. Is this a spirit released which took place in a bird? The symbolic why the horse has only three legs eludes me completely.
The loneliness and mood of this painting is intriguing. I understand the tilt of the cross, but in my opinion it would balance the painting better if the cross would tilt in the opposite direction. The colors are adequately emphasizing the mood of the painting.

Thank you for your feedback. Since this is kind of like reality fictionalized, the bird simply represents the fact that the cross would have been inviting to birds. No spiritual intention there. In reality, my mislead father was obsessed with putting up "spiritual antennas." That is what this cross is, but it seemed to me like that was to bizarre a claim to put in my notes. That is why I wanted to see how readers would react to the composition without the explanation... Oh by the way, the horse does not have three legs. I used a photo of me from the time period as a guide-- the leg is hidden behind the other leg. Daphne Oberon

This has wow factor. Beautiful colours that enhance the well told story. Its very stark and I believe by your story a dramatic illustration and works well. I would have given 6 but you already got that earlier. Good digital work, I am not experienced in digital but on observation this looks so good. Thank you for sharing

Thank you -- I don't think I ever got six for this piece but thanks for the thought! Understandably I get so many different reactions to this one! Since you are one who likes it, I'll share a paste of what I wrote someone who couldn't figure it out.... There's something lonely and serene about this piece that I enjoy, kinda like an Edward Hopper painting. The color scheme speaks peace to me, while the subject matter speaks isolation/desolation. I don't know why I find it comforting, but I do.

Perhaps you find it comforting because the rider appears to have a grip on her fears? Or the expanse of desert? good heavens, that is deep. It is not how I would have translated it. I thought maybe early christians, with the bird representing their flight. The simple colour scheme works a treat. The edge of the water is dangerous and the earth infront of the church with its grid prison window, also noteworthy,it is a sort of entombment. A second path tells us of others there. Your mind really travels deeply. Do you paint with a brush at all?

My thank you for your insightful review. That is sweet to say my mind travels deep. My Grandmother used to say her "still waters run deep" when I was little. he nicknamed me Cinderella. I don't know if the "still waters" thing is "nature" or lack of nurture and a lot of travel being dragged around by my father, or both! You read my description for Anigmata, right? After getting away from the "long arm of my father" as is also suggested in Anigmata (his church), I worked in the US show and race horse industry and had both hands injured in ways that make actually holding a pen or pencil and doing anything with it pretty difficult. If someone had not given me an old copy of Adobe Illustrator that I taught myself to use, I would not draw at all. So even though Illustrator is a glitchy program, I am very grateful for it! Thanks for you insights, Daphne Oberon

I like this piece a lot.
The symbolism is strong within the simple piece.
The sky and san are plain, leaving the attention on the story being told.
Very nicely done.

I am not sure I like the interpretation but the piece is well done and gives you a feeling of finding peace in the desert. It also reminds me of a church in New Mexico.

Did you read the composition description? I would just be interested, if you read it, what you don't like about the interpretation. Also, how you might change it and still keep the message? Thanks! Daphne Oberon

Maybe it was just off the wall for me; I am from the southwest and would of fashioned a story of a lonesome cowboy nearing the church. You have a lot more creative imagination than I do

Your description was very descriptive and a good one. It is just that I am from New Mexico and I can see a lonesome cowboy heading for hope in the desert; it reminds me of a church in New Mexico.

Profound artist's notes!

Visually soothing setting and appealing compositional elements!

Diminishing perspective adds more depth to the image.
Vanishing viewpoint looks intriguing.

Is the cross bigger than the horse & man in reality?
Fantabulous horizon.

Simple backdrop pops out all those compositional elements
Aesthetically!

Thanks for sharing...

Actually, the cross nor the cell and rock/hill would be very big. I am afraid my father actually locked young people up in very small places. Sarcophagus size, phone booth size, and 4x5... Do you like reviewing manuscripts?? I have some! Daphne Oberon
