have you ever seen a heron so alert? its truly beautiful to see a relaxed yet stern posture captured here. the murky water behind adds great depth

Wow you really captured this heron perfectly. I like how he is standing up so straight and tall. You framed this guy perfectly. I and I also like how it is so clear that you can just see every little detail as he dries off his wings. Well done and thanks for sharing. I hope your New Year has been off to a good start. :)

Wonderful initial impression, I remember Roberts photo, it's so interesting the way the heron positions it's wings to dry them. Very well photographed with spot on focus, the image is clear, exposure is perfect, the colors and tones are natural. Nice clear detail is easily seen in feathers, face and bill, I see a few loose feathers on bill, good eye contact! Well composed with a nice placement of this beautiful bird in frame, I love the lake as background. Well presented and a pleasure to view! Beautiful work Fred!

Nice capture Fred of this Heron. As I explained to Robert, it's not so much that they are drying their wings, although after soaking or bathing they may do this. The reason they turn their wings is too warm the underside as well as use the heat to straighten wings or get rid of parasites. It's a behavior I see often with Herons and Egrets. Anhigas and Cormorants they have to dry their wings in the sun in order to fly.
It's a fine shot taken with fine focus and nice enough white balance control with some minor hot spots.

What a superb pose you have caught in this shot. It really is appealing. The bird stands proud . Its lines are crisp and well focused against that dull green background that gives depth and allows the main subject to be viewed in all its lovely detail
