Wow, I enlarged this for detail, and noticed the same thing, his crossed legs and legs straight back. I've only seen herons when they were swooping down to grab trout out of my dad's pond, or standing. I've never seen their wings at full span. That bird is bigger than me. I noticed at about mid way on the upper ridge of that wing. Is it damaged? I love the varying of color in each feather. Very cool

Thank you for your nice comments :) I don't think it's damaged. I think that is where there is very little feather and more skin at the bend where they fold their wings, if I'm looking at the same spot. Sounds like your dad's pond is a great place to visit!

Nice wings up in flight position, good timing to stop this action , this is well focused, the image is clear, exposure is well managed! Colors and tones are true, I like the way he crosses his legs as he flys! Well composed allowing room for him to move into! Well presented!

This Heron is definitely giving us a great look at his wings! This photo is very well composed with the Heron flying into the picture. The light and color are great. He stands out so well against the dark background.

Grace,
A fantastic stop action picture of this Great Blue Heron in flight showing off its six foot wing span & with the light shining on the underside of the upper wing everyone of it's flight feathers are clear to see & count given the time to do so. The dark backgrouns is perfect to show off the heron to best advantage. Artistic composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.
