I have never seen anything like this plant. It is quite interesting with the unusual patterns and wine colors, along with the shape. I guess the pattern on the petals resembles patterns on snakes.

    Grace,
Thanks a million for your complementary review on this wine coloured Snake's Head Fritillary. Checkered Daffodil, Leper Lily ( as it was said to resemble the Snape of the bell a Leper was forced to carry to warn people to stay away) Gunea flower among other names. I live in hope to get better flowers next year from the bulbs.

Nice close up to the flower,, but the focus is very soft and this takes from the initial impact

also, the bright spot on the right bottom is a distraction

thanks for sharing

Well this is the first I see in my life time and for sure they are very attractive, they look like the little squares of my fractals loll, but nature is made out of fractals so it is perfect
excellent capture , well framed , your camera setting are excellent and the fine framing help to pull the focus on the flower head
perfect natural color saturation, genuine contrast and lighting, well presented

Very interesting looking flower, I would love to see one in actuality. The angle of your shot makes this look like three globes hanging down, rather than a singular flower. Nice colors indeed. Th photo feels a little soft, but still works well. Thank you for sharing.

    Charles,
Thanks a million for your complementary review on this Snake's Head Fritillary. The flower is bell shaped & the petals incurving at their sides.
I will try to take another shot in better light to get sharper focus...not easy as the flowers move in the sligist breeze.

    Vincent,
Thanks a million for your complementary review on this wine coloured Snake's Head Fritillary. They are eye catching & not difficult to grow the blubs which you can buy in Garden centres in the Autumn.

Hi Susan, it is certainly understandable why it is called a Wine Snake Head. I love the way the colors create the sense of texture. It makes me think of ways to re-create this effect in art. Beautiful flower and great photography.

    Christine,
Thanks a million for your complementary review on this wine coloured Snake's Head Fritillary...They also come in white which I already have in the garden...but to my eye are not as beautiful as this wine coloured one
reply by Christine Rohr on 21-Apr-2019
I'll bet the white are rather delicate and lacy looking though.

This is one that I have not seen before, it's intriguing, the purple tones and the pattern on the petals is amazing to study, this is well focused and you have managed the exposure very well allowing a good view of this interesting flower, this angle of shot also allows a good sense of the shape and structure of this flower and how it grown facing downward . Well composed and presented!

    Pat,
Thanks a million for your complementary review on this Snake's Head Fritillary. Hopefully I'll some better pictures next year. The ones I bought are really past their prime but If I take care of the bulbs I should have them for years to come.

This year I actually have these in my garden, but of course they have not come out yet. The one you have pictured here looks so lovely with the purple pattern, and even it the background is a bit busy, it is standing out well.

Perhaps the flower should have been in even sharper focus, but it is fine details to be seen, and the exposure is very good.

The photo is also nicely cropped and the flower has got a fine placement within the frame. I also think the vignette you have added is working well.
All together a lovely and well taken photo Susan.
