Huh, learn something new everyday. I had never heard this before. I wonder if anyone else even has a picture of such a thing. I am tempted to look on the internet to see if you have the one and only shot! Great capture of light in the eye. I had a hard time getting close to any of the puffins the brief time I was there. I am very impressed.

Thank you so much Christine! I didn?t know they shed their beaks after breeding either,I just learned this myself, but I?m sure it?s a well known fact by people who really study birds, I just think the puffin is the cutest and I was happy I got to see them, this is on Gull Island out of Homer.

What a great shot,I never knew that they shed there beaks, was always used to seeing their colorful ones,so really didn't give it any thought. Thank you so very much! I didn?t know they shed their beaks either, I don?t think I have ever seen one without the bright orange beaks, I really appreciate your wonderful review! .

I live to far south to observe these birds in reality, but your image tells me a lot about them. I can see the shedding in process. Flaps hanging on the beak are still partly attached. The bird apparently is not bothered by the change. The colors are excellent and look natural. The light reflecting in the eye is intriguing. The tight framing is adequate for a bird portrait. The composition is well balanced.

Great looking close-up shot of the bird. I mistook for a painting at first sight!:) The light and shadows, colours and the composition have worked out well. Good effort!

That's most interesting,Pat!
But Puffins are definitely fascinating Avian creatures, aren't they?
Your portrait photograph of this this one ,with it's beak going back to 'normal' is a lot of fun to view! : )

Fantastic capture, excellent close up - Interesting explanation - I never saw this kind of bird and the orange beak really stands out, I knew about changing tales but beaks, wow, we never stop learning
I am wondering if this is a black and white with just one object standing out
in any way you did a great job with excellent camera settings and skills, well done

A beautiful subject that is shown in very good detail. The composition is attractive and I like the catchlight in his eye as well as the great colors on his peeling beak.

These are interesting birds that I don't get to see. You did a pretty good job shooting the black and white together and maintaining some definition and detail to the feathers. The bill looks great and well focused. It is interesting to see the beginning of the shedding stage.
