YOW,Cindy Sue!
That was my initial reaction as I thought I might be looking at a picture of the end results of some kind of exotic southeast Asian venereal disease!
( The type they showed us movies about back in Basic Combat Training! ) On eventually reading your well-written notes I realized what it actually was that I was looking at and,while it might not be a technically perfect 'masterpiece' of a photograph,it's certainly an interesting and wonderfully Out of the Ordinary picture!
I won't call it a 'Good Show' ( your plant died after all! ) but it's Cool!

I?m rolling on the floor laughing so hard right now Sean. I worked public health as a RN in the streets of Lost Angel less 28 years ago. We had to rotate the VD clinic rotation. Your note tweeked my brain to a Flash Back. I know exactly what films you are talking of. I even had the equipment up front after the films to show the ?Boy?s? the roter rooter ream beam machine. Lots of moans durning the films. Thank you for making me use my brain. One less step to dementia. Thank you for your review. It was the most creeped out I have been in a long time. First off, sorry you could not save your plant. Good thinking on separating it from the others. I like your photo but it appears as though you have softened the focus through cropping. As this is a contest entry it will get a closer viewing. I would like to suggest that you might try and edit it with some sharpening of the mealy bug details and softening of the background. Good luck.

Interesting shot backed by an interesting narration. I have no clue about these strange critters!:) . The light and shadows, colours and the composition have worked out well. Good effort!
