Good information to accompany this image of the hippo out of the water to eat grass, I find it interesting that the birds are on its back, here the magpies will sit on the back of a moose while it grazes. This is well focused, the image is clear, exposure is managed well, colors and tones are natural. It looks so warm there! Well presented Fred!

Nice capture of a Hippo out of the water with birds on its back. Natural colors and tones in the scene. Good lighting, sharp focus, good DoF, and well balanced photo and nicely composed in the frame. Overall, a very nice wildlife Photograph of a Hippo, well done.

Fred,
An interesting picture of the Oxpeckers picking insects off the back of this grazing Hippo bathed in sunshine near water. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.

Nice shot of the full length hippo with birds on his back. He looks quite shiny (with the sun shining on him) as if just out of the water. Good clear and focused image and composition. Well captured. Thanks for sharing.

Wow I didn't know that about hippos but this is a really neat picture that you took. It is in good focus and the color tone is really good. Thanks for sharing.

It is interesting to see a hippo grassing like this, and also to see the birds all over its body. I suppose they find insects that way. I also like a lot the warm and inviting light, and how lovely it is falling on the hippo.

The photo is Nice and Sharp showing truly Clear and well defined details in every part of the hippo, and the exposure is just Perfect.

I do however think it is an imbalance in the composition With all the negative Space at the bottom and very little at the top. I understand that you wished to shot the hippo's Connection With water, but I still think this photo would have been if it was cropped in another way.

Still this is an all together lovely and well taken photo, and With a very good DOF.

    yes, I think you're right: maybe not necessary to show the water;

As always, love your text. I also enjoy viewing this photograph. There is a gentle calmness about this picture that wants me want to linger a while to look at it. Nice job with the landscape reversal of the blue sky reflected in the water below the land and Hippo. You know what you are doing so my critiques are not given as comments about how to improve work. They are comments about what makes a particular photo appeal to me. Reasons for my five star vote.

A very nice shot. I like the water in the foreground (I always assumed they stayed near the water when on land) and the birds pecking parasites from his skin. Well composed with great colors.

Hippos ... the psychopaths of the animal world.
A good image shot in very nice light and the hippo certainly looks nice and sharp.
Not sure about the water bottom of frame, I think that cropped out the image is much stronger.

The long shadows say this is late afternoon. It is interesting to see the hippo grazing and I like the birds resting upon his back. I like that you captured the marsh grasses at the edge of the water at the base of the scene as it reminds us that the hippos need both the grasses and the water.
