The rocky bluffs have great texture and color and are very inviting to the viewer. The sky color and clouds are a perfect complement to all the "action," but the splashes of gray are a distraction to me because the dark streaks are not realistic. Such a bright blue sky wouldn't have color applied in this manner in my sky-watching experience. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your five star vote and your critique, especially about the splashes of grey and dark streaks. I appreciate both. But, I must ask a question. Have you ever been at the Grand Canyon or in Santa Fe, New Mexico? There are times that the sky is simply wonderous.

I have visited Santa Fe three or four times and lived in Albuquerque for 3 months doing some volunteer work. Loved New Mexico...the people, the sky, the landscape, the arts, the history. Have you ever painted the cottonwoods in fall there? The leaves are stunning.

Fabulous! Actually yes. I did a collection of paintings of El Rancho De Los Golondrinas. It is a living museum just south of Santa Fe on the west side of FWY25 in the area of the Horse Race Track. Hum, maybe I should post a few of them. I would have been just as happy to have remained in New Mexico, but my kids and grandkids are here in southern California. So, there you go.

This is a beautiful piece Carl! The depth and use of color give quite a spectacular initial impact, those highlights and shadows are awesome. That sky and clouds have really been rendered nicely and add a great backdrop to the landscape. I really think this piece will serve you well in the contest as it painted beautifully and very eye appealing to the viewer. Great work and good luck!

This is so well done Carl. I learned so much from you description of the many challenges of taking an original pencil drawing and enlarging it with paints. You have accomplished a daunting task very well.

Is this one the final 30" x 40" ? Do the smaller ones look as complete as this one? At any rate this is a great work of art Carl. Kudos ~ Steve

Thank you for your five star vote and your comments Steve. This is the final 30"X40" painting with color. The other two are line drawing on paper.

This is a clever form of art Carl that I know little about. The detail in this image is superb as you show the vastness of the Grand Canyon. ( I went there in 2000 for a day and was awed by the experience). The sky is wonderfully represented with the moving fluffy clouds. Light and shading of the canyon and details are so well done. Thank you for sharing your creation.

Wow I can't believe you painted all this with just a palette knife. The textures of the canyons speak for themselves. I like how you made the distant canyons have a bluer color tone, while the ones up close have a lighter browner tone. The blue sky looks great too, with the blue color gradation from dark to light. You did an excellent job with blending the colors together, with a palette knife. The canyons you painted in the distant look incredible, with their precision and the way you blended them into the background.

Thank you for your five star vote and your comments. I appreciate both. And well it wasn't just a pallet knife. It was three of different sizes.

I have never managed to produce a Nice painting by using a pallet knife, but you seem to be very good at it, and I agree that it is easier to bring out textures. And this is also what I like the best about Your painting. I also like a lot Your color pallet With the Nice and Natural colors.

Even by the use of a pallet knife, you are paying good attention to details, and I also like how well you have used white to bring life and light into the painting.

The format and framing is Perfect, and it is a fine flow and Balance in the composition. A truly lovely and well done painting Carl, and I wish you Luck With the contest.

Great entry for the contest, Carl. Lovely oil painting of this wild looking landscape. I love the colours you used for the rocks and cliffs in the canyon and the texture you have shown. The fluffy white clouds in the sky contrast well. You've created a great depth to the view. Really lovely. Good luck in the contest. Suzanne

This is a wonderful knife painting which I find difficult to do. Good composition and you captured the contrast of the canyon rocks. I don't particularly like the sky, it doesn't blend well with the texture of the foreground.
