Geology is so interesting, but also frightening, as it makes me realise how fragile Earth is and how easily we all depend on everything working alright. Some years ago my son, underground engineer, rang me and told me someone had set of an underground blast so strong, it had moved the earth by some fraction of a degree, small but worrying. NO one owned up, though everyone was asked. This is the beautiful side of geology. The Stratas are so even and obvious. Amazing.

Nik,
A beautiful & very dramatic landscape with this conical rocky outcrop with it's time worn layers of strata exposed to the elements of rain, frost, wind & friction from windblown sand over eons of time to many to count. Slowly wearing the surface away the overcast sky providing the perfect backdrop. Beautiful composition framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.

Very nice and subtle. The colors are harmonious with each other. The hues of the strata is beautiful. Nice subltle movement of purples ii to ivory and Into orange mountain tone. The sky is a great accent to the colors of fading tones of the mountain.

Yes, very different from Brittan! I wonder if those are caves or just overhangs on the right. I love to explore high caves in this kind of terrain. I found amethyst geodes one time, but they were too hard to get to, standing on the slippery red/pink earth in a perpendicular cave. lol!....

This photo is excellently focused and exposed. I appreciate the sharply refined details and the realism of color and light. The textures show how wind and water sculptured the rock formation. The formation is excellently placed within the frame. The composition is balanced.

Nice. I like the subject, composition and perspective of the shot. I'm curious if darkening your exposure just a touch would add more drama to the colors as well as the sky. Great detail

Oh, ha! I'm half-English but I've never been to England and was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. I see a lot of this from Nevada to Arizona to Utah even in some California deserts. All this used to be underwater and out here so you can see where the water was stopped over years. If you like that, you should definitely check out Red Rock and valley of fire in Nevada! Great catch!!

It's my pleasure, my mother was born in Nottingham, England and her mother was born in Derbyshire, England. Derby has their own slang... are you familiar with it?
-
No, we are in Lancashire which has its own slang!
-
In Derby, when they want to say, hey how's it going? People from Derby say, "Ay up me duck! Hows your mother for dipping?" In Derby's dialect, they do not pronounce their H's.
-
Very interesting! Will have to listen out for this the next time we are in Derbyshire!!

The fascination of nature with all its wonders and this rock hill with many bands of colours. Like wide painted stripes.
Your landscape image is clear Nik and true to life against the grey cloudy skies allowing a more dramatic effect! Thanks for sharing part of your trip!

That is indeed interesting looking, sorta has a pyramidal shape to it. I definitely like the strong color patterns on this unique rock formation. Nice sharp focus to bring out the details and excellent soft lighting for the colors;the background cloud formations really set this off well.A really enjoyable find, thanks so much for sharing!
