looks like a cotton mouth..many those in the bayous of mississippi and louisianna. the clarity is great. the angle of the shot of this snake swimming is great. the capture of the light is great. the image is balanced and eye interesting to the viewer. good eye and great job overall.

Hi Mark, I'm a little behind with my thank you notes so hope you'll forgive me. :o) I imagine a lot of snakes look familiar. This is a Black Northern Water snake. If I'm ever down south I'll be sure to keep my eyes open, because I know Cottonmouths are poisonous. I'm so glad you enjoyed the shot. Thanks for the wonderful review.

quick funny tale..in high school we had this project to gather up critters for science class..you should have seen it..8 teenagers running in the shallow area of Bayou Pierre chasing after 1 lonely cottonmouth..we frightened that poor snake cause he swam away fast..most of the time the snake would move towards water movement..guess all that whooping and hollering we scared the hell out of it..lol..yeah we were young and stupid..wink

It's amazing the dumb things we did when we were young!!! I love your description of the goings on though. I can imagine it as quite a sight to see. Glad to know you made it unscathed through the rampage going on. Definitely feel sorry for the snake! LOL

Here is another one.. William Faulkner (famous writer) grandson was in my 8th grade class..that boy was not like his grandaddy..he was dumber than a box of hammers..a group of us was in the woods off the Natchez trail looking for snakes for school project.. Faulkner hollered out that he found a snake..lil did we know at the time the copperhead had popped him from a branch...so when we asked "where?" .. Faulkner points his finger in front of the snakes face saying "right there!" The snake bite him again making him jerking back slinging the snake in the air. The snake was stunned hitting the ground and didn't get a chance to reacted when we threw the chicken wire. We were only 1/2 mile from the hospital. So we grabbed home and the snake and off we went. When we got to the hospital the nurse asked what kind f snake was it that bit him?..when we showed her she freaked..now the doctor wanted it to milk it for the antienom. Now that took a while to convince a few teenagers to give their prize. The doctor asked "dont you ean to save your buddy?" We all said "he ain't our buddy!"..we finally gave it up. Wink

Good Heavens!!! I may not have all my marbles but even I wouldn't do what this guy did! Are you sure YOU'RE still alive... or are you a ghostly version of the once known MKFlood ? I can't believe you made it to adulthood with the people you hung out with! LOL You should do a series of images called "Snake Adventures with MKFlood". I bet you'd get a lot of reviews! I know I'd be in line to see what adventure happened next! :o) Nancy

guess the tale of a snake coming into my sleeping bag while is in the army would be another...lordy come to think of it i did have some funny stories about different critters in my life...one thing for sure..those critters were just as scared as i was...lol

Mark, I would say you definitely have a plethora of material to work from when it comes to snakes!. A snake getting into your sleeping bag....YIKES!!!!! You're a genius when it comes to telling stories. Imagine what you could create,,, though you do a fine job without me butting in! LOL Do what makes you happy...always!

One more thing...If by chance we should ever meet and there's a snake nearby...you might need binoculars to find out where I disappeared to!!!! LOL :o) Nancy

A beautiful shot that captures the sinuous form of the snake very well. I like the detail in the head and think the smooth water makes a perfect setting.

Hi Lise, I know there are plenty of times I don't capture the image I want because of movement. It's a wonderful feeling when you get the shot right. I'm thrilled you felt I did a great job taking this shot. Thank you for the wonderful review! :o) Helvi

Nancy,
An interesting picture of this Black Northern Water Snake slithering it's way in S bend curves through the shallow water looking for it's next meal. Though I have Horror of snakes I have to admit they can be beautiful..at a distance. Beautiful composition framing and lighting taken with superb camera techniques and sharp focus. Good luck in the contest.
Susan

A fantastic shot of this snake and so worthy of a six from my point of view .The diagonal composition is excellent as it becomes a real attraction to the viewer and great to see the subject in its whole entirety and with such sharp detail of focus.Well done and good luck

An excellent entry into the contest with the snake curling along the shallows of the water. The white balance and exposure are well handled with good focus on the snake.
