This piece grabbed my attention right off the bat! I absolutely love the almost muted tone, and the contrast between the bush dog's head and body/background really pulled me in and the eyes kept me there.
I do have the impression that you may have rushed in creating the background; given that the dark colors from his fur seemed to have gotten mixed up with the gray (by the ear and underneath).
Looking at the background, I also notice that your painting technique seems inconsistent throughout the piece.
The criticism I gave would've probably been overlooked if it weren't for the poorly done composition and the obtuse quietness of your piece. The gray background makes me feel almost claustrophobic.
This very well could have been an intentional aspect of your painting because of the fact that the bush dog lives in captivity and is a near threatened species.
However I don't have the impression of this being your intent because you probably would've written that above. But that feeling of loneliness and quiet overwhelms me regardless, and carries much weight.
I can't help but feel a lonely pull.

Thank you very much for your wenvouraqgementr an for your critique.
Apparently you misunderstud some of my comments.
Althrough, this animal lives in captivity and, the zoo provides an environment which resembles the native wildernes of the original Bush Dog range. The animal is not lonely. It does not live by itself, but is member of a pack.
The neutral background is not rushed. The background resembles the environment and colors the zoo provides. Therefore, the textures at the background are intended.
The difference of the brush strokes is intended also. The bpurposwe is to show the different consistence ande lenght of the hair, and its different coloring. The overcoat has coase hair while the under coat is softer. [For reference search the online enceclopedia WIKIPEDIA and WEIKIMEDIA]

I see. I?m not sure I understand that the gray background represents its natural environment. It?s natural environment is definitely not gray. It feels muted and lonely regardless of your intent, and that?s okay. My criticism is an outside perspective. I hope you?re not offended. But you do have room to improve. If this was done free handed then I believe you have some serious talent but I still think you should work towards improving your compositional skills and techniques!

I am not offended, but I still disagree . I don't understand how the animal could feel lonely in the company of an entire pack. The background is coase sand. The sand originally gray. Those dogs need those areas tyo rool in them and clean themself od parasites. :o)

I didn?t say the bush dog was lonely. The painting itself is lonely.

Sorry, but I am too stupid to understand what you mean. A painting is a thing, like an cocking pot or the shoes on my feet. I think a thing cannot feel lonely. :o)

Have never seen or heard of this animal before. The pose is natural and gives a sense of movement. The lighter colors on the face are nicely accented by the darker body.

A well done work of digital art Cleo ~ Steve

The warm tones of the subject juxtaposed with the cool tones of the environment has nice contrast.I like how some of the tones of the background are brought around the eye area to connect the subject with their environment. Perhaps the background could have had a bit more detail for added interest. However ;I love how the bush dog has an impish grin.

The neutal background is intended in order to avoid distractions from the animal. :o)

The bush dog is new to me, but your art and description makes me interested in learning more. It is nice to see how you were able to paint the fur to where it looks very natural in the way it lays. The texture in the painting is very nice.

Hey there Cleo!
This is a great rendition of this bush dog. I have never hear of them they almost look prehistoric. Great use of color and highlights. The depth you have rendered with the contrasts is a nice touch. Well framed and presented Cleo.

Those animals are indeed some of the oldest canines on earth.

I have a question? Do people have these dogs as pets or do they just run wild. I have never heard of them and to me they look like they might be mean. Also are they this color because they just look out of place. Sometimes I see things on here and it makes me wonder what else might be out there. I like how this is framed and I like the information that you have shared about this Bush Dog. JackJr.

Those are not pets, but wild animals, althrough, some mixed breads with domestic dogs are found in their native environment. Those dogs are indeed dangerous. They are predeators which eat meat.
    The colors are authentic.
Mixed breads occure when domestic dogs escape from their honors. That means that some mixed bread puppies are kept by native people of the jungle communities when their female dog returns to the owners.
You will find more information on the species on the online enceclopedia WIKIPEDIA. :o)

I normally never review digital art, as I do not use it at all, have no idea of what is involved and so am not really in a position to have an opinion on it or comment on it. As a former teacher/lecturer who was always very strict on examination rules, I can't help being careful. But they are nice dogs. That is all I can say.

This is very nice work. There's something about the dog that seems expressive, and yet, I can't settle on his emotion. The texturing of the fur in different areas is interesting. Well done! I do think there could be a little less contrast of lighting between his head and body. He captured my attention for sure!
