Awesome shot! We only have blue herons where we live, so I've never seen a grey one. I like all the texture going on in your photo. The composition and clarity are good, too. Best of luck with the contest!

His face is well in focus, he seems keenly alert and aware. The exposure is nicely balanced showing off the colours well. Thanks for sharing

This heron is indeed posing for you in a lovely way Fred, and I really like the way it ruffles the feathers. The light is falling on the bird in such a lovely way, and I also like very much the background. The bird is standing out from it in an excellent way.
The photo is very sharp, and it is truly clear and well defined details to be seen in the feathers of the bird. The exposure is perfect.
The photo is also nicely cropped and the bird has got a fine placement off to the left. I think this is a truly lovely and well taken photo, and with an excellent DOF.

This is interesting seeing the heron ruffle it's feathers. Perhaps they are trying to trap in the body temperature to stay cool? It makes for an exciting different view. Nice focus and placement. The clarity is good as is the technique. Appreciate the natural surroundings.

Great details. This heron has the look of "yep look at me. looks good". I never saw a heron like this. The ones I have seen had the feather plastered down. He must be airing them out.

Fred,
A beautiful picture of the Grey Heron with ruffled plumage looks as if it's allowing the sunlight to kill off mites in it's plumage as I have observed with my birds. Beautiful composition framing and lighting taken with superb camera techniques and sharp focus.
