Male red winged blackbird

Well this is a first for me. I see Red-Winged Blackbirds often as they live in Florida. I have studied them from egg to fully grown and never saw a bald headed one. Mostly Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals will be bald during a molt which is normal. All other birds it often means something is wrong.
It could be the result of an abnormal molt. Staggered feather replacement is the normal pattern for most birds.
Baldness also may result from feather mites, lice, or an environmental or nutritional factor.
The Male is a gorgeous bird with a beautiful song that can be heard at sunset every night at the Wetlands.
You have a great capture with fine white balance control and sharp focus.
There is a a Project Feeder Watch that people sign up for sharing their unusual feeder bird photos like you have here.
It's not a molting I have ever seen of a Red Wing.

Many thanks for the great, and informative review! I?ve had blue jays show up minus the majority of their head plumage, but this red wing really took me by surprise. I was fortunate to get a couple of good photos of it from the car before it flew off.

A great shot and an excellent entry for this contest. The detail in his bald head is superb and the colors are very natural looking. Best of luck in the voting.

Beautiful photograph of this bird, so nicely colored with the orange details.
The posture, eye contact and all the details are so nicely presented with the green background.
Good luck in the contest.

Indeed odd and a fine capture of the bird. Like the orange dashes on each side. You did a fine job with the background. The bird looks heavier than the limb. Kinda looks like he has a thick feather or wool wrap at the top that is pulled up, separating from his bald head. Not the prettiest creature but you did an expert job of an odd one indeed.

A good looking image posted here into the competition! Your fine and appropriate composition offers us an enjoyable view of that strange bird. To me, he looks like a lance corporal in the bird world. Exposure and sharpness are fine. Well done and good luck!

Certainly odd looking and a little prehistoric. Great entry into the contest. He has perched there very nicely for you and your focus is great. The plumage looks very healthy so possibly has molted and not yet replaced the head feathers. Thanks for information.

I agree that it looks prehistoric, would be more appropriate if it had skin and leathery wings! thanks for your review!

Creepy, weird, bizarre, and kind of funny too. This is the sort of thing that could give a small child nightmares if it landed on or near his window seal! It would also make for some fun by using just his bald head in a freakish mixed media blend with other animals or even a person. Plenty here to stir the imagination!

Definitely took me by surprise, I was expecting a normal looking redwing, not something from a nightmare!

It's a nice picture of a red wing blackbird. I also have shot a lot of red wings, never without the feathers on its head. It's a unique shot of him.
