My first thoughts were that this lady seemed to be forcing a smile then I reread the copy and title. That is the exact feeling you wanted to convey. The use of pencil was a great choice. I can see the hurt in her eyes. The facial muscles show stress/. THis was the first thing I noticed when I got the feeling of an unhappy smile. You have portrayed the "unhappy smile" perfectly.

It is not easy to draw a portrait, but I think you have done well. I have tried myself, so I know. I think especially the eyes are well done, because you have brought both life and light into them. Also the nose is fine, while the mouth looks a bit too big. She has a lovely smile though.

The tight framing is working well, and the girl is well placed on the paper. I think this is a lovely and well done portrait drawing Linda.

I think this is a very interesting drawing. A beautiful girl with a nice smile and lovely features. However, I can see the sadness in her eyes. Well done.

Sometimes it is indeed hard to read behind someone's smile.

This is a nice pencil sketch. The only suggestion I have is perhaps darken your shadowing a tad more ignorer to give more contrast.

Good luck in the contest.

One can never know what is behind the smile. The smile can mean so much and we always aquatint the smile with happy but it sin't always so as you said. I think this was a great practice drawing. I like it keep it up

This is a very nice pencil sketch of a girl with lovely features. She has a soft smile that is not forced and eyes that are relaxed. All proportions of the face are right on. You said no photographs so this is a live sketch of someone you know or a self portrait. Why would someone depressed sit for a portrait and why, if you were practicing, would you do it of someone else? This is a beautiful self portrait. There is so much talk of depression and sickness and how it influences moods and expressions you get to know who it could be. Any way good luck in the contest. Ray

She does an excellent job, hiding her true emotions. She does look indeed happy, not depressed at all. Her smile is infectious. It touches ny emotions. I just want to smile back. Your drawing is excellent rendered. I am impressed by your attention to realistic detail. Proportions and perspective are correct. The framing is adequate. The portrait is well composed and framed. The composition is balanced.

You have captured in your sketch a blank smile. Your notes give us the story but its there in your work, the smile does not reach the eyes .. very clever. The sketch is well drawn however more shading and toning would give this a depth and form that would enhance the overall presentation: the light strokes I feel are bland and need that extra pressure in parts
