A prickly cactus well armed

This cactus is indeed prickly, and I especially like the way the light is falling on the plant. I also like a lot that the photo is presented in black and white and how well the cactus is standing out from the background.

The photo is pin sharp and it is indeed clear and well defined details to be seen in every part of the plant. Great distinctions between light and dark and perfectly exposed.

The cropping is working so well, and the cactus plant has got a fine placement within the frame. I think this is a truly lovely and well taken photo Allan, and with an excellent DOF. I wish you luck with the contest.

Wow ! That was my first thought! This is amazing , Allan , first of all very clever in deciding to render this cactus in Black and White and I'm positive that this was way more exciting than the original image!
This just draws the viewer in , so well photographed with spot on focus , this image is sharp and clear and exposure is perfect, well shown tonal variations in both the black and the white , you have brought out the shape, structure and every detail on this cactus plant , I love the white spikes and I have experienced the pain of touching them too!
You have achieved such nice depth here, it's a wonderful composition , very well presented! This is a fantastic entry for this contest , this will be difficult to beat! Very best wishes to you !

Thanks Pat, the WOW goes to this review, I am very humble with your comments. You are spot on with this b/w rendition being better than the color version. I had the color version in my archives for year and never thought it was worth posting. That shows the power of b/w used appropriately. And the six rating is the icing on the cake!

I just have to say that this image is so impressive in B&W. It just simply would not have the same artistry dramatic appeal in color. I'm always trying to think of images that would present nicely in B&W and never considered cactus. But WOW!

Those Needles are so dominant in the scene. The image is skillfully captured with nice depth and contrast. Lighting is very well controlled here and allows the subject to stand out from the background in a very impressive way. The tight frame really supports the image and leaves the viewer(s) locked onto the subject.

A top contender for a B&W contest. Good Luck Allan.

Hi Kathy, you nailed it. In color this was not much of a special photo. The white needles caught my attention and I wondered if a conversion to b/w would work. Based on your kind comments, it worked. Thanks for your analysis of this image as that is always helpful.

Oh, and the 6 rating was icing!
