My first camera, when I was but a lad, a Zenit B single lens reflex, made in Russia from girders - robust isn't the word, I'm sure you could buy an accessory that converted it into a car jack in fact. Manual everything and exposure by guesstimation (I used to dream of an exposure meter), a month or two later I found a second hand enlarger and promptly converted the bathroom into a darkroom. I was bitten. I avidly read everything I possibly could on the subject of photography and became a fountain of useless knowledge, people shunned me for quoting the refractive indexes of various lenses at them. A few years later a new fangled Olympus OM10, automatic everything became mine, first accessory - an adaptor so I could use it as a manual camera. Old habits die hard I guess. That met an unfortunate demise on a mountain top at 40 below zero, killed by cold, but my newly acquired Olympus OM2n kept right on going. I still have it along with a couple of other Olympus SLRs, they were great for mountaineering; in fact I remember slipping on a glacier and sliding several yards on an OM4 - it lost some paint but still worked fine. I'm pretty sure that would have killed my Nikon DSLRs. Nowadays I've forgotten much of the useless information I learnt in my youth. I could care less about the refractive index of my lens elements, I shun people who quote refractive indexes at me. Life is easier, my pictures are better and now I study photographers rather than technical info. I live and exhibit here in France, frame and print my own work and still use a spot meter and the manual setting on my Nikons way more than I probably should.
