I shoot in RAW and archive my images as TIFF (13x19@300dpi). All the varied tonal adjustments are made in processing the RAW file. The TIFFs are most frequently just cropped and sharpened (High Pass @ 0.9).

Most people shoot birds as "grab shots".
I treat them more like studio shots. I have a room in my house which I use as a blind. I first locate a background (often a house across the lake) which I choose for color. Then I place the perch on a light stand about 12 feet in front of my shooting position and line it up against the background. Then I try to attract the birds into the setup. I made a small feeder from a jar top which is located just outside the image frame and I put sunflower hearts in it which are a favorite of almost all the local birds. They are used to this tiny feeder which can only hold one bird at a time and will stop by to check it out even if it is empty. Then you just hope for cooperation from the light and the birds. I collect sticks, branches, logs etc. to use as perches wherever I go and my trunk and backseat are often full of these treasures.
