Gatewaywest grew up in St. Louis as the youngest in a big family and busy household. She began learning photography when her grandfather gave her his old Canon SLR just days before he passed away.

She moved to Los Angeles for college and to work as a film production coordinator for several film and television studios. Much of what she has learned about photography has come from standing behind a movie director.
