I was deported on my first birthday along with 48,000 other Huns - bit of ethnic cleansing. Eventually, half a century later, I visited Budapest, with my family papers of five generations, to show my lineage- Hungarian mix for hundreds of years- and asked about the possibility of re-settling my mum and myself in Hungary- my ethnic home. A fat woman at the Ministry, threw my precious papers across her polished floors from her desk and growled: what do you expect me to do with these. I was so upset, anyway being pressured by the British lab and corrupt Ministry men- now this-- I sat in the polished corridor of the Budapest Ministry building trying to get my head around it, as I had always thought of myself as a Hun, even the Germans had registered me as a Hun and when the Germans do something it is generally so! A man came along, this time a nice person, asked: what is the matter- I told him. He said: go over there, where you were born. They are different times. I didn't say this. What, they took all we had, everything, even baby dresses and family photographs, and gave my grandparents one room for the whole family /seven children and some grandchildren/ which my Austrian grandmama had bought with her dowry when she wed my Hungarian grandfather under Masaryk / all nations and all religions will be treated equally- heard that since haven't you//- all our businesses, tailoring, bakers etc gone in a flash, and he wants me to go over there.. sooner go back to UK and be pressured - at least when strangers pressure you, you can hate them, even if those strangers themselves brought you to their island as future citizens. I had to express my sadness and disappointment somehow. ALL I CAN SAY IS -I WISH MY MOTHER HAD CHOSEN AN IMMIGRATION COUNTRY - but I know the reasons now...
