In 1964 Alaska was hit with a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 it happened on Good Friday which was on March 27 in that year. This is what remains today in Portage the ground here dropped 8 feet ( 2.4 meters) salt water from the Turnagain Arm flooded into this area destroying the buildings and killing the trees. This building and partially sunken vehicle still remain on the sight today.
