A Story To Tell - Art Contest Entry
on this day Jun Jun became Martha at Qingdao Catholic Church having asked me to become her Godmother. It was Christmas Day, a wonderful memory of China. The old German built Church was huge and dark so I desisted from bright colours- you will know that the chinese from all China come to Shandong as tourists, --my favourite place and where I always went as a teacher, --as the Germans built so many castles etc there. There is a joke/?/ that the Kaiser fetched the Ambassador back to Germany because he spent so much money in China, on his pet city, saying : we could have won the war, if you had not spent so much money in China. Many Germans remained loyal to China and Germans were found as POW's of the Japanese taken prisoner. There are endless German/Chinese stories. I chose the name as Martha too had walked to meet Jesus. I did warn Martha to think carefully, as the present government has a very liberal view to its population, but should there ever be a reversal to old policies, she must be aware-however, she said that her family /real estate people/ had been Christians all through Mao Tse tung etc and had been respected as Christians were seen to be honest, she had no worries on that score and like so many wanted to follow the family tradition. In retrospect, I wish I had taken her out for a meal, but I am not a foody and pretty poor, and meals is just not something that springs to my mind initially.
