Photograph of the Month Contest Entry
I hadn't seen and Eastern Blue in 2 years and then this old dude shows up. You can tell this ones up there in bird years by the long chest feathers and the dappled back color. This session was all that I could get because after eating his fill of seeds and suet off he went, never to be seen again. Why lucky? The day was typical early April heavy overcast and add to that I am shooting through a less than spotless double pane window. The one advantage I had was time, the bird wasn't in any hurry to move on. Lucky by the fact he was dead still for up to 10 secs at a time - plenty of time to make the adjustments when he is in profile. I focused on the eye, but due to cropping it makes it appear that I centered on the lower shoulder. In low light situations I found I can reduce EV metering by -.5 and still get a good shot. The adjustment is just enough to shorten exposure by a step or two and not impair detail noticeably and can be brought back with a +.5 on the exposure slider. I set the camera to 'Bulb" in order to eliminate motion from 'mirror slap'. Sometimes you just get lucky ... Bob
