Beginning the trail of the Elephant Rocks

A chapter in the book Elephant Rocks

The Start of the Elephant

There is now a state Park in Missouri called Elephant Rocks. When I was a little girl, my aunt and uncle lived near there and we played on the rocks all the time. Later, it became a park. I loved it as a child, but interestingly, when I went back to see it as an adult, it was bigger and more interesting than I remembered. That has been the case every time I go. It is a huge outcropping of granite boulders and some say that from the air, it looks like elephants. There are wagon tracks on some of the rocks, and carved dates. I never tire of it. I will be posting more than one picture to give you an idea of its size. At one time, the stone was taken out to pave the streets of St. Louis! Fortunately, they put a stop to that and now it is preserved so we can all enjoy it. I hope you do.
